Before testing AdSense code

When testing your new web site, you have to be very careful with AdSense code. It’s very common to reload your pages again and again. But if you pages contain AdSense code, each time you reload, you make a request to AdSense ads Server which sends you new data. Because Google is unaware that you are testing they might penalize your account.

Google AdSense policies also require that websites displaying AdSense ads must be active and not under construction.

So, how can you test your web site without violating AdSense TOS? The simplest way is to remove all AdSense code from all of your pages. Of course this is not the best solution as you won’t be able to see how AdSense fits in your layout. There are many effective solutions and workarounds which will help you not to get banned. Here are my favorites:

  1. Set the value of gogle_ad_client to something like “pub-testing”.
  2. Ad google_adtest = "on"; line to AdSense code - you have to get permission from Google to use this.
  3. Use images with the same dimensions as your AdSense code. You can find static images of various ad formats in AdSense help.

What are your precautions before you test your pages with AdSense on them?

    I don’t think you should be adding lines of code to the AdSense javascript, as this itself is a breach of their TOS. I would have thought that a few tests with live AdSense would be fine, as long as you don’t go into the hundreds - they can’t expect you to implement their ads without a little bit of playing around.

    I think the main thing is to leave the code alone and don’t click any of the ads!

    Rob, you have to receive permission from Google and then you can add the following line of code:

    google_adtest=’on’;
