Porn ads in AdSense
September 13th, 2005 at 11:56 am
Last week (before my vacation) I received an interesting email from Rob. He spotted some porn ads in AdSense link unit on top of My Money Blog (below you can see a screenshot). Porn ads were spotted at Let online tools help you begin.
I was very surprised because I didn’t think that Google had such ads on AdSense. Does anybody know how to avoid showing this kind of ads? Do you have any experiences with it?
I contacted AdSense support team and now I am waiting for a response. Will let you know when I get one.

Technically, those aren’t “porn ads”, they’re ads for pornography-related keywords. AdSense rules prevent you from displaying ads on adult-related sites, but that’s not what we’re talking about here. This is the problem of having unwanted/inappropriate ads showing up on your site. Advertisers are placing ads for adult-related material with AdWords and obviously bidding on the general “keywords” category and that’s why they’re showing up in your blog.
What can you do? Firing off email to Google like you did is a great step, it’s always good to let them know that you’re concerned about these kinds of things. It does take them a while to get back to you.
In the meantime, though, you have to work on getting rid of those ads. The simplest thing to do is to start filtering them (ahem) explicitly. But perhaps better is to target your content more precisely using the new AdSense section targeting feature.
Mind you, if you’re writing about high-paying keywords then those ads are well-targeted.
Note that adult-oriented ads are allowed by AdWords, see https://adwords.google.com/select/guidelines.html for the details.
What’s needed is a way for AdSense publishers to specifically control whether or not adult-oriented ads are allowed to be published on their site.

Wow, I wonder if I had ever gotten any ads like that on my site as well. I sure hope not. I am sure that many visitors would get offended or something if they were to see that on a site. Is there a blacklist or something that we can use to block these ads from appearing? I suppose they are relavent ads because they are all keyword ads in your screenshot, but… it says porn. Surprised that ads for that isn’t coming up in this post now seeing that the word, porn, is in the content.
Good eye Rob
And thanks for the post so I am aware of this occurance. Would sure be dissapointed for that to show on my site.

Thanks for your explanation, Eric.
I also got a response from Google:
“We will investigate further in order to prevent these ads from appearing on your site again. Google AdSense is a family-safe network, and we strongly believe that adult-oriented content does not belong on the AdSense network. If you see behavior like this again, please let us know.”
