Search engine ranking factors top 5 list

This is a folow up post to my first article about Search engine optimization for beginners.

There are many diffrent factors that can influence web page rank at the major search engines like Google, MSN, Yahoo! and others. There were some heavy discussions about the importance of individuall factors, although it is impossible to say which of them affects which search engine and how they affect on page rank.

Based on my personal opinions and expirience I created a top 5 list which can help you with search engine optimization for your own web site.

  1. Title tag - The <title> tag in (X)HTML always shows at the top of a browser window and is often used in the search engines as the title of the web page.
  2. Global popularity of site - Popularity of site is measured with all incoming links to a unique domain. More incoming links from important sites (high page rank) will have more influence on your own page rank.
  3. Keyword use - Use of keywords users search for in search engines. It’s very important that relevant keywords are appearing in the document text.
  4. Anchor text of incoming links - The text of incoming links is very important to determine a sites’s subject or what it is about. More topic-relevant-anchor-links pointing to the site will have a better ranking influence for the site.
  5. Accessibility of documents - Accessibility is important for search engine spiders. 404 errors, plug-in requirements, URL re-directs or other technical issues will cause problems to spiders and indexing the site.

You should know that some of above factors are on page - the control is in your hands; but some are not and your control over them is very limited.
